who what where why when : the questions about lent

hey! so this post is going to be all the ins and outs about lent, according to me anyway. as a christian, lent doesn't just mean that time of year when you give something up; it means something deeper.
i want to try to delve a little deeper into lent this year and not only share about it, but use blogging as a means of helping myself reflect, too.

what is lent?
lent is a period of time in the christian calendar - of the 40 days leading up to Jesus' resurrection, after  dying on the cross. it is the time when Jesus was in a desert for 40 days, where he fasted and was also tempted by satan.

so who is lent about?
from my perspective, lent is about two people, really. the first is Jesus. christianity is based on the fact that Jesus died on the cross before coming back to life and conquering death, all because of His love for us. so lent is about reflecting on what Jesus went through, how much He loves us and the actions He did to show us He loves us...
moving swiftly to us. lent is also about us and how we choose to respond to His actions.

why am i participating in lent then?
as a christian, i feel it's important to remember the things Jesus has done for us and to actively react to His loving actions, not passively. during lent 2019, the 'luxury' i'm giving up is snacking. when i struggle and am tempted, i am reminded of the trials that Jesus faced, too. but, i am also reminded that there is strength that comes from God.

where is lent?
lent can be observed anywhere - it's just a period of 'preparation' time before the time of celebration for both Jesus' death and resurrection (as morbid as it sounds, there would be no resurrection with no death though).

when is lent?
lent starts after shrove 'pancake' tuesday and lasts for 40 days (the same period of time Jesus was tempted for), leading up to easter sunday, that is His resurrection. this year, it's from 6 march until 18 april (it changes cos lent follows a liturgical calendar).

i hope this wasn't like some mega crazy deep post but when it comes to faith, it's hard to keep it all on surface level i guess.

i do hope that perhaps this will give you some things to think about too, whether you're partaking in lent yourself or not. there's no harm in doing your bit to be nice to people, or just challenging yourself and using it as a time to train your mind.

wishing you lots of good returns,
haynam x

for more info, there's an interesting explanation on the 40 acts page, too. :)
